The Baltimore City Mayor’s Office of Employment Development and Department of Public Works has partnered with the Chesapeake Water Environment Association to design and operate the YH2O Career Mentoring Program. YH2O is for Baltimore City residents, ages 18-24, who have a high school diploma or GED, are unemployed or underemployed, and, are not currently enrolled in a job training program or post-secondary education. Baltimore City is proud of the 96 young men and women who have successfully completed YH2O since its inception in 2015.

What is YH2O?

YH2O is a six-month program that prepares young adults to be employed in full-time jobs within the water industry at the completion of the program. The goals of YH2O are to:

  • Educate Baltimore City young adults about the water industry and its career opportunities
  • Develop a pipeline of future workers with the right skills to fill entry-level positions in the water industry

YH2O consists of 3 phases including:

  • Phase I: Participants complete skill and interest assessments, take part in basic job readiness training, and are introduced to the water industry. (Time commitment: 2 days/week, 3 hours each day, for 9 weeks) 
     
  • Phase II: Participants explore a variety of career options available within the water industry, take part in job shadowing experiences and worksite tours, and, are paired with a career coach. (Time commitment: 2 days/week, 3 hours each day, for 10 weeks) 
     
  • Phase III: Participants are placed in PAID summer jobs through YouthWorks and begin interviewing for full-time positions. (Time commitment: 5 days/week, 5 hours each day for 5 weeks) 

Where is YH2O held? 
Most YH2O activities are held at the MOED Youth Services headquarters located at 101 W. 24th Street, Baltimore, MD 21218. Field trips and job-shadowing will be held offsite.

Kristen Conaway has joined the 2020 YH2O class and looks forward to moving from having a job to having a long-term productive career.

Lamonte Sherman has had plenty of jobs but considered them all dead ends. He is looking forward to starting a career with the city and being prepared for global opportunities in the water industry.

Youth Opportunity (YO) Baltimore

Older teens and young adults, ages 18-24, who are out-of-school and unemployed can connect with academic classes, GED prep, job training, and other services through YO Baltimore. At the city’s two YO Centers – one in West Baltimore and one in East Baltimore – young people can build on their skills and strengths to get back on track.

MOED partners with local organizations that offer proven workforce development programs for young people ages 17-24. Each program provides a small, nurturing learning environment with qualified staff to assist with life skills, employability skills, occupational skills training, and career development. 

We partner with awarded organizations to provide educational and career training services. To be accepted into these programs, eligible teens and young adults must be committed to completing the enrollment process and all program activities, and to attend on a daily basis. These programs are funded by the federal Department of Labor Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) youth grant.

Grads2Careers: Job Training and Employment Programs

G2CGrads2Careers helps recent Baltimore City Public Schools graduates begin careers by providing free job training programs to prepare youth for successful employment in well-paying, high-demand, and high-growth careers. These graduates and Maryland High School Diploma (GED) recipients who are 18-21 and live in Baltimore City are eligible to take job training and earn certifications in a variety of fields, including automotive, biotechnology, construction, health care, information technology, distribution & logistics, and land surveying. 

The initiative is a collaboration among the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development, Baltimore City Public Schools, and Baltimore’s Promise. For more information or to submit an application to join, visit Grads2Careers.
